Charles River Alleycats (CRA) is a volunteer-powered nonprofit dedicated to reducing the number of homeless and free-roaming cats in Eastern Massachusetts. Since 2002, we’ve helped over 20,000 cats through humane, effective Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).
Our vision is a future where every friendly cat has a home, and every feral cat is sterilized, vaccinated, and cared for in their territory.
Thousands of cats and kittens are born outdoors each year in Massachusetts—many without shelter, food, or care. Charles River Alleycats (CRA) exists to change that. We partner with community members to humanely trap free-roaming cats, find them veterinary care, and help control their population through a proven method called Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).
Our volunteers respond to reports of outdoor cats and work directly with local caretakers to ensure they receive the help they need. This approach keeps feral cats healthy, prevents new litters, and gives friendly strays and kittens a chance at finding homes.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a proven, humane method to manage outdoor cat populations. Cats are safely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and then returned to their territory—or placed in homes if they’re friendly. This approach prevents new litters, keeps cats healthier, and gives kittens and strays a chance at adoption.
Community cats are humanely trapped by volunteers.
Cats are sterilized, vaccinated, and—if feral—ear-tipped at a veterinary partner.
Feral cats are returned to their colony caretakers. Friendly strays and kittens are transferred to shelter partners for adoption.
